Family Affairs
The dining room table would be a very important ploace for family activities. A family from the Randolph's era would have been very strict and followed proper guidelines for family activities. A family would eat togther every night and use the proper etiquette.
There were eleven children that John and Emily had. In order from eldest to youngest it is Ella Eugenia, Algernon Sidney, Moses Lidell, John Hampdon Jr., Mary Augusta, Emma Jane, Cornelia, Sarah Virginia, Annie Carolina, Peter Everette, and Julia Marceline. Julia Marceline was the only child born at Nottoway. Sarah Virginia was the only daughter who never married, she was very sick throughout her lifetime. Cornelia was John Randolph's favorite child, and she published a diary under her name spelled backwards. Algernon Sidney was the only child who lost his life in the Civil War, he was shot by a sniper during the Battle of Vicksburg.
The Randolph's
John Randolph married Emily Jane Lidell and together they had eleven children. John was the son of a judge, Peter Randolph. John was also born in Virginia to a wealthy family. When John married Emily he recieved a dowry of $20,000 and 20 slaves, which would be very much in terms of present day.
